Vote to privatize passed with 68% in favor 2009-11-05 : This is a red letter day in the history of Sturgis Hospital. Thanks to voters and the efforts of the Sturgis Citizens for a Healthy Future Committee that helped make this a reality.
Sturgis Hospital has been a part of the City for 85 years, but the times we live in call for us to move to a more contemporary organizational structure. Over the next couple of months we will be working to get everything in place so we can make the transition to Sturgis Hospital, Inc by January 1, 2010. Neither associates nor you will likely see any impact on daily work and service routines as we come up to the end of the year and move to the new organizational structure after the first of the year.
A big change like this can make everyone a little anxious; however, we hope you’ll be reassured by the fact that most of the hospitals in the country have an organizational structure like the one we are going to, so we know it is tried and true. We hope you will join us in celebrating this as a major step forward for the Hospital and the community.

 Prevention Information for H1N1 2009-09-09 : H1N1 INFLUENZA
It has been about four months since the discovery of the H1N1 Influenza Virus (previously known as “Swine Flu”). This new virus was first detected in people in the United States in April 2009. This virus is spreading from person-to-person worldwide, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread. On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) indicated that a pandemic of H1N1 flu was underway.
Since the WHO declaration of a pandemic, the new H1N1 virus has continued to spread, with the number of countries reporting cases of H1N1 nearly doubling. The United States continues to report the largest number of H1N1 cases of any country worldwide.

There is no question, prostate cancer is hands down the most serious prostate disease a man may encounter - affecting nearly two million American men. Yet, it is not the only prostate condition that men face. In fact, there are several prostate related conditions that can largely impact a man's quality of life, including:
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) and Enlarged Prostate: a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate, BPH occurs commonly in men over the age of 60. In some men, the enlargement can cause bothersome urinary symptoms, including difficulty urinating, the need to urinate quite frequently, or awaking during the night to urinate.
Prostatitis: an inflammation of the prostate gland, which can be cause by a bacterial infection or unknown origin. There are three types of prostatitis, including acute, chronic and nonbacterial. Depending on the type of prostatitis, symptoms may include: sudden fever or chills, urinary symptoms, and pain (back, urinary, testicular, lower abdomen, pelvic, ejaculatory).
Erectile Dysfunction (ED): a significant and common medical condition, ED can be defined as the inability to achieve and/or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual activity. It is estimated that as many as 100 million men worldwide suffer from ED. However, more than 85 percent of men with ED don't seek treatment. The failure of sufferers to seek treatment is especially unfortunate because ED is a treatable condition and may be a symptom of another underlying medical problem that should be addressed.
Urinary Incontinence: the inability to control urination. The term may be used interchangeably with Over Active Bladder (OAB), which also includes the same frequency in urination and urinary urge. It is estimated that over 12 million Americans have urinary incontinence, which affects all ages, both sexes and people of every social and economic level. It is also estimated that 15 to 30 percent of people over the age of 60 who live at home have incontinence.
If you are experiencing any of the symptoms noted above, talk to your doctor to determine if you may be suffering from one of the above conditions.
For more information on these and other prostate conditions, visit us at www.prostateconditions.org.
Sincerely,
Wendy Poage

Key risk management policies/systems evaluated during the on-site assessment include: tracking systems to follow-up in medical tests, referral, missed appointments, etc.; Medical record documentation; medication and allergy lists, informed consent; relaying of medical information according to policy; routine test reminders; handling of non-compliant patients; communication and on-going risk management education of physicians and staff.
“All 83 medical offices that received an “excellent” rating have practices in place to address key risk management issues,” said Carla White, Senior Risk Management Consultant. “They should all be commended for their dedication to superior risk management, patient safety and quality care.”
