Often times when one is diagnosed
with breast cancer, the emotions can be quite overwhelming.
Those of us in the group have found courage and support
from others as they've experienced the different stages
of treatment. If you are newly diagnosed, just beginning
treatment, or if you have completed your treatment,
someone will be happy to listen and encourage. We invite
all persons who have had breast cancer and are currently
in remission, those who are at various stages of treatment,
and those who are just beginning treatment, as well
as their friends and family members, to attend our meeting.
The Annual Survivors’ Sisterhood Picnic will be held
at Thurston Woods Park in Sturgis at 6 PM on Tuesday,
July 6. This is an opportunity for all members to
attend, bringing along families and friends, for a
great social hour. Members are asked to furnish their
own table service, beverages, and a dish to share
with the group. We will be using the picnic tables
at the southwest shelter. Come and enjoy a nice evening
together.
We are looking forward to the Sturgis Hospital Health
Fair on August 14 and are planning to have a “booth”
of materials for folks who drop by to visit.
And we are still looking for ideas for our October
Breast Cancer Awareness Event. We have not as yet
set a time or place.

| Our Mission Statement: We are
committed to the emotional support and encouragement
of those who are experiencing the effects of breast
cancer, either personally or by relationships. As a
group of breast cancer survivors, we actively support
community education concerning this disease. |
 |
| Where and when do the Survivors'
meet? We meet in the Classroom near the Sturgis
Hospital Cafeteria the first Tuesday of each
month at 7:00 PM. The meetings are a time of
sharing personal experiences and concerns as well as
presentations of programs of special interest and assistance. |

Group History: Following successful
treatment for breast cancer, Karen Borgert and Kathy
Miller felt a void. Their own experiences with breast
cancer left them with the sense that a support group
was needed in the Sturgis area. They shared their concerns,
individually, with Trish Grubb, Sturgis Hospital technician.
She put them in contact with one another and ultimately,
the breast cancer support group was formed.
Today over 25 women have found support through this
group. Many are long term survivors with as many as
25 years cancer-free; others are as newly diagnosed
as the day before the meeting. All come to give and
to get encouragement and strength from one another.
In developing this website, they hope to reach out to
still more people with similar needs. |
